Ferrari has released yet another video of the all-new California Coupe-Cabriolet on its dedicated website. However this time, the Ferrari California is shown racing around various locations in the computer animated world of Sony’s Gran Turismo 5 video game. Could this mean that the new California will make an appearance in one of the forthcoming updates of the GT5 Prologue series or even the actual Gran Turismo 5? Hard to say since there’s no official announcement, but we’ll keep you posted on the matter for any future developments. -Video after the jump

We’re going through a (matte) black and white phase this period here at Carscoop so this Mercedes-Benz CLK 63 AMG DTM Cabriolet shown over at our Dutch friends at Autoblog.nl, was something we couldn’t ignore. If it were our money, we’d certainly go for the Coupe as the Cabriolet looks kinda weird but we wouldn’t mind at all taking this 582 Hp “fraulein” for a spin. However, something tells us that we’d have to figure a way to do it without the “Dork 1” licence plates.

The attack of the uber-wagons continues; spacious and at the same time outrageously powered, the C 63 AMG Estate isn’t a car for the faintly hearted. Packed with the same 6.3-litre V8 as the C 63 AMG Saloon that delivers 457 hp at 6,800 rpm and maximum torque of 600 Nm at 5,000 rpm, the Estate equals the even more ludicrously powered RS6 Avant’s 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) time at 4,6 sec. May we remind you that that the 507 Hp M5 Saloon takes 4,7 sec while the Touring, 4,8 sec… Need we say more.

The new Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Estate: Unique high-performance estate

Affalterbach - Following in the Saloon’s footsteps, the C 63 AMG Estate is now also due to be launched. Under the bonnet with its distinctive power domes, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine delivers effortless acceleration. The high-revving naturally aspirated engine sets the benchmark in this segment with its maximum output of 336 kW/457 hp at 6800 rpm and maximum torque of 600 Nm at 5000 rpm. The unique high-performance estate accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds; top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited).

Power is transferred by the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC. Equipped with AMG steering wheel gearshift paddles and the three driving modes “C”, “S” and “M”, the seven-speed automatic transmission delivers a decidedly sporty or comfort-focused ride depending on the driver’s tastes. The automatic throttle-blipping function when downshifting is another innovation. The load capacity of the C 63 AMG Estate ranges from 485 to 1500 litres (VDA measuring method) depending on the position of the 1/3:2/3-split rear seat backrests which can be folded forwards. No other car in the premium estate segment of this vehicle class can match this capacity. Standard equipment includes bag hooks and four anchoring lugs to secure the load, side stowage compartments with covers, a collapsible shopping crate as well as a combined luggage cover and retaining net. 2008 Mercedes C 63 AMG Estate: Frankfurt Show Debut

Yesterday we wrote “In 2008 Mercedes will broaden the range of the new C-Class Estate with an AMG version”. Duh… Our reader Leo from Germany though had a different state of mind honoring us with a set of images featuring the 2008 Mercedes C 63 AMG Estate. Apparently, the C 63 AMG Estate will make its premier at this year’s Frankfurt show along with the rest of C-Class Estate versions.

Just like the C 63 AMG Sedan, the Estate is equipped with a normally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine delivering 457 Hp and 600 Nm of maximum torque. According to the info supplied by our friend Leo, the C 63 AMG Estate will sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.6 sec (Sedan: 4.5 sec) and achieve an electronically governed top speed of 250 km/h (155mph). We’ll have more on the 2008 C 63 AMG Estate as soon as Mercedes… officially unveils the car.

Following up on our morning post on the 2008 C 63 AMG here’s the official press release along with all 22 high-res images of Mercedes’ new sports sedan. In a nutshell, the C63 AMG is equipped with a normally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 engine that delivers 457Hp and 600 Nm of maximum torque. Accordingly, the C 63 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 4.5 sec, while its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155mph) meaning that Mercedes’ proposition in the super sport sedan category is stronger and faster than its archrivals, Audi RS4 and BMW M3. With the new C 63 AMG, Mercedes-AMG GmbH is making a confident statement to mark the 40th birthday of the company. The new V8 flagship model is now the fifth generation of the AMG C-Class, whose family tree goes back to the C 36 AMG of 1993 – the very first vehicle developed as a cooperative venture between Daimler-Benz and AMG.

Merely the appearance of the C 63 AMG is impressive enough, with its wide, road-hugging stance. The new bonnet with its prominent power domes conceals the independently developed AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine, which develops a fulminating 336 kW/457 hp at 6800 rpm from a displacement of 6208 cubic centimetres. In this respect the C 63 AMG comes very close to the 470 or so horsepower delivered by the AMG C-Class racing touring car in the DTM series. This high output also benefits the power-to-weight ratio, which is a very favourable 3.6 kg/hp.

The torque developed by the AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine need fear no comparison either. The maximum of 600 newton metres at 5000 rpm is unrivalled in this class, and the torque curve is equally impressive: from 2000 to 6250 rpm the driver always has more than 500 newton metres on tap – ideal for powerful acceleration in any engine speed range.

V8 with thoroughbred racing technology and a designer exhaust note

Introduced in 2005, the V8 engine is installed in numerous AMG high-performance cars and excels with its thoroughbred motor sports technology.

Perfect cylinder charging is guaranteed by the vertical arrangement of the intake and exhaust ducts, as well as the magnesium variable intake manifold with two integral throttle flaps. Other high-tech features include variable camshaft adjustment, four-valve technology with bucket-type tappets, a particularly rigid aluminium crankcase of closed-deck design and the low-friction TWAS coating on the cylinder contact surfaces.

Among the particular strengths of the AMG V8 engine are outstanding responsiveness and enormous pulling power – by virtue of its large displacement, it develops over 30 percent more torque than comparable engines in this performance class. Electronically controlled fuel delivery is another reason for the outstanding agility and responsiveness to movements of the accelerator. With its sporty AMG sound, which was designed-in during a series of sophisticated trials, this eight-cylinder powerpack from Affalterbach offers the unique excitement of a fast-revving, naturally aspirated engine – an audible and immediate experience whether at low, medium or high engine speeds.

In the interests of optimal reliability, the C 63 AMG has a particularly efficient water cooling system and large engine and transmission oil coolers. Located behind the large apertures in the AMG front apron, these coolers ensure non-critical operating temperatures at all times – even under the extreme stress of the racetrack.

Like all AMG high-performance engines, the AMG 6.3-litre V8 is built in the AMG engine shop on the traditional "one man, one engine" principle. This means that one technician is responsible for hand-assembling a complete V8 engine to the highest quality standards – which is attested to by his signature on the AMG engine plate.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC with blipping function

This high-performance eight-cylinder engine has the perfect partner in the form of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC transmission. Equipped with AMG steering wheel shift paddles and three driving modes, the seven-speed automatic transmission allows a decidedly sporty or more comfort-oriented style of driving according to the driver’s preference. The different modes - "S" (Sport), " C" (Comfort) and "M" (Manual) differ in their shift characteristics and speed: gearshifts in "S" mode are around 30 percent faster than in "C", and no less than around 50 percent faster in "M" mode. Pressing a button is sufficient to activate the desired driving programme.

The new C 63 AMG is the very first AMG car to feature an automatic throttle-blipping function during downshifts. This not only enhances the driver’s emotional experience – the almost completely jolt-free downshifting process also reduces the load-change responses and has a particularly positive effect when braking before bends on the racetrack.

Redesigned front axle with 35-millimetre wider track

The C 63 AMG owes its outstanding handling dynamics to the AMG sports suspension and an all-new three-link front axle design. The stiff configuration of the springs and gas-pressure shock absorbers ensures optimal road contact and low body movements when negotiating serpentine bends at speed. The new front axle has a 35-millimetre wider track – visible by the more widely flared wheel arches – and therefore ensures lower dynamic wheel loads when cornering. A number of features make for substantially more stability and precision in all driving situations: the redesigned wheel location at the front axle is 100 percent more rigid, leading to a considerable improvement in steering precision. Another benefit makes itself felt when braking, as the new wheel location ensures an immediate response even under high dynamic stresses.

In combination with completely newly configured elasto-kinematics, the new wheel location provides greatly improved lateral dynamics and allows the driver of the C 63 AMG to benefit from significantly higher cornering speeds. A larger torsion bar stabiliser, new head bearings and dampers with rebound buffer springs further enhance this stability and precision. Steering feedback is also improved by the new kinematics. The speed-sensitive AMG sports steering has a ratio of 13.5:1, but feels more direct as a result of moving what is termed the instant centre of motion at the front axle. A more rigid Hardy disc in the steering column, as well as modified steering characteristics, make a further contribution to increased precision.

The multi-link independent rear suspension has also been thoroughly re-engineered, with a twelve-millimetre wider track and more camber leading to improved cornering performance. Reinforced drive shafts and drive joints increase fatigue strength and round off the improvements to the rear suspension of the C 63 AMG.

The completely newly developed AMG sports suspension combines outstanding handling dynamics with the long-distance comfort to be expected of a Mercedes – which also means that the C 63 AMG has the characteristic virtues of a genuine AMG.

18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels, 19-inch wheel/tyre combination on request

The C 63 AMG is appropriately fitted with new, 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a five-spoke design. Painted in titanium grey, these high-sheen wheels in size 8.0 x 18 and 8.5 x 18 are shod with wide-base tyres in size 235/40 R 18 (front) and 255/35 R 18 (rear). Even more dynamic handling is made possible by the optionally available 19-inch AMG light-alloy wheels in a multi-spoke design. The front wheels are in size 8.0 x 19 with 235/35 tyres, with 9.0 x 19 wheels and 255/30 R 19 tyres at the rear.

Generously dimensioned AMG high-performance braking system

Internally ventilated and perforated disc brakes all-round reside behind the spokes of the AMG wheels. The front brakes have size 360 x 36-millimetre discs with six-piston fixed callipers, while deceleration at the rear is by 330 x 26-millimetre discs with four-piston fixed callipers. The AMG high-performance braking system is characterised by great sensitivity and high fade-resistance.

3-stage ESPÒ with Sport function as a new feature in the C 63 AMG

The Electronic Stability Program ESPÒ is specifically configured for the dynamic performance of the C 63 AMG, which is the first AMG model to feature the 3-stage ESPÒ with a Sport function. This system offers three different control settings, and is a logical further development of the AMG ESPÒ philosophy. The ESP key in the centre console enables the driver to choose between three modes - "ESP ON", "ESP SPORT" and "ESP OFF" – the currently active mode is shown in the central display of the AMG instrument cluster.

In "ESP ON" mode, the onset of handling instability leads to braking intervention at one or more of the wheels, accompanied by a reduction in engine torque. Briefly pressing the ESP key activates "ESP SPORT". In this mode the braking intervention to counter oversteer or understeer, as well as the accompanying reduction in engine torque, allows a higher dynamic threshold and, for instance, corresponding drift angles – which means that the driver of the C 63 AMG benefits from considerably more active driving pleasure. ESP Ò is restored to its normal function as soon as the brake pedal is operated.

Prolonged pressure on the ESP key activates "ESP OFF". There is no intervention to control the handling dynamics, and no reduction in engine torque – thus increasing driving enjoyment even further. "ESP OFF" should only be used by experienced drivers on dedicated racetracks. In this mode too, operating the brake pedal restores all the normal functions of ESPÒ.

The system’s traction logic is active in all three ESP Ò modes. If one of the drive wheels threatens to spin, specific brake pressure is applied to create the effect of a mechanical differential lock. This means that the engine power is optimally transferred to the road.

More distinctive exterior design than ever before

It is not only in technological but also in visual terms that the new C 63 AMG is more distinctively different from the standard C-Class than ever before. The front end is dominated by the new bonnet with its two pronounced power domes, as well as the trademark AMG radiator grille with a central star and two louvres with chrome inserts. The honeycomb pattern of the grille is also reflected in the large air dams of the new, athletically contoured front apron which forms part of the AMG-specific bodystyling. The fog lamps with chrome surrounds are spaced well apart, acting together with the flared front wheel arches to accentuate the width of the car – with the striking transition from the front apron to the wings leaving a particularly strong impression. The side air vents in the front apron serve to expel the hot air from the oil coolers. If the C 63 AMG is specified with the optional bi-xenon headlamps or the Intelligent Light System, the headlamps are also dark-tinted.

Eye-catching features when viewed from the side include the 18-inch AMG light-alloy wheels, the harmoniously integrated "6.3 AMG" lettering on the front wing and the AMG side skirts. At the rear the standard LED rear lights, the AMG rear apron with its black diffuser insert and three pronounced diffuser fins, as well as the AMG sports exhaust system with two chrome twin tailpipes, provide further visual highlights that are hallmarks of the brand. The AMG spoiler lip on the boot lid reduces lift and ensures greater handling stability at high speeds.

AMG interior with new sports seats and performance steering wheel

This decidedly sporty theme is continued in the interior of the C 63 AMG, which now has special AMG sports seats with integral head restraints for the first time. The seats not only feature a new design with cross-piping and AMG lettering, but also an adaptive backrest with adjustments for the side bolsters and lumbar support. The standard upholstery in ARTICO man-made leather/AMG fabric is available in a choice of black or reef grey – or as an option the interior can be further enhanced with particularly high-grade leather in black, reef grey or black/sahara beige. Perfect handling control is assured with the new AMG performance steering wheel in a three-spoke design, which has a rim diameter of 365 millimetres and a flattened lower section. The upper section is covered in perforated leather, and two silver AMG shift paddles enable the gears to be shifted manually.

AMG main menu with a wide variety of displays

The trademark AMG instrument cluster in a tubular design features newly styled dials, AMG-specific lettering and a new night-time design. Eye-catching details include the 320 km/h speedometer scale, AMG lettering, red needles and the "6.3 V8" logo in the rev counter. The AMG main menu in the central display allows numerous settings, with "Warm Up", "Set Up" and "RACE" modes activated via buttons on the AMG performance steering wheel. "Warm Up" displays the engine oil and coolant temperature, "Set Up" the current ESP Ò mode and the transmission mode "S", "C" or "M". "RACE" mode makes the RACETIMER available, with which the driver is able to measure lap times on a racetrack.

Development and design of the C 63 AMG

Creating a new car is a complex undertaking, and this certainly applies to the new Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG whose conceptual phase commenced in 2004. This began with the fundamental feasibility study known as packaging. The new C 63 AMG was first constructed as a digital model, the engine, cooling system, fuel system, drive train and axles being "married" with the bodyshell to examine buildability. In spring 2005 the first 1:4-scale design models were produced on the basis of drawings and computer images, and in addition the first testing & development vehicles were already built on the basis of the preceding C 55 AMG. This made it possible to test major assemblies such as the drive train, brakes and axles. The latest onboard measuring technology provided valuable data such as engine oil, coolant and brake disc temperatures – but other aspects of interest were lap times e.g. on the north loop of the Nürburgring, as well as measurable, precisely defined handling manoeuvres to provide comparisons between different axle configurations. These tests were accompanied by extensive aerodynamic tests on the bodyshell of the C 63 AMG, and it was only then that the final design was approved.

Following approval of the concept in the autumn of 2005, the first fully-fledged prototypes of the C 63 AMG were built. At the same time the high-performance saloon was also produced as a digital prototype. Computer simulations made it possible for the "real" development prototypes to exhibit a very high level of maturity during the first rollout. These simulations included the most important vehicle functions, such as handling dynamics, the engine and drive train, bodyshell durability, suspension performance, passive safety, the engine’s thermal characteristics and performance/fuel consumption.

From Affalterbach to every climatic zone on earth

The standardised and highly sophisticated AMG development and test programme for the C 63 AMG began in summer 2005. Over the next couple of years around 20 vehicles were dispatched all over the world from Mercedes-AMG GmbH in Affalterbach, to be subjected to strenuous tests in every climatic zone.

Test, analyse and optimise – that is the creed of the specialists at AMG to achieve the objectives laid down in the book of specifications. Another decisive aspect was an ongoing dialogue between Design and Development, so that any necessary technical modifications were also implemented in design terms.

In addition various endurance trials are run, with the aim of simulating the vehicle’s entire lifecycle under the most severe conditions:
North loop of the Nürburgring: The car’s drive train, suspension, wheel location system, dynamic control systems, tyres and brakes are tested on the world’s most demanding racetrack.

Long-term testing on different roads: All the components and systems are tested together in everyday operation. Loaded up to their permitted gross vehicle weight, the test cars are put through a precisely defined test programme on country roads, motorways and in city traffic.
Endurance testing on the DaimlerChrysler proving ground in Papenburg: Extreme acceleration and braking manoeuvres with a high proportion of full load operation, making extreme demands on the cooling and fuel delivery systems.
· Endurance testing in the Swabian Alb region: The vehicles are loaded up to their permitted gross vehicle weight and driven on country roads with numerous uphill and downhill gradients, placing extreme loads on the transmission and drive train.
“Heide” endurance testing: (named after the poor post-war roads across the “Lüneburger Heide”): 2000 kilometres of extreme trials on the test track or on state-of-the-art test rigs. In this case the focus of the developers is on the durability of the drive train components, the entire bodyshell and the integral subframe on which the front axle, steering and engine are mounted. The test cars are loaded up to their permitted gross vehicle weight.

These tests are supplemented with extensive crash simulations and real crash tests, to provide the necessary evidence for country-specific certifications without which no registration would be possible. The end result is final vehicle approval – the green light for the launch of the C 63 AMG.

Someone let the dogs out quite earlier than we expected, but hey, that’s totally ok with us. While we’re waiting for the white collar folks down at Stuttgart to finish off eating their mini-wursts so they can upload the press release let’s see what we have beginning with the heart of any sports car. Under that bulgy hood the 2008 C 63 AMG is hiding the same normally aspirated 6.2-litre V8 engine that’s fitted in the CLK 63 AMG, E63 AMG, CLS 63AMG etc. As anticipated, Mercedes detuned the engine in comparison to other AMG models, lowering output to 457Hp. Still though that’s 37Hp more than the that its two German arch rivals, the 2008 BMW M3 and the Audi RS4, both of which are equipped with 420Hp strong V8’s.

In terms of maximum torque, the 6.2-litre V8 reaches a whopping 600Nm at 6.000 rpm, but there’s 500Nm of torque available from 2.000 to 6.250 rpm. The C 63 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in 4,5 sec (RS4: 4,8 sec, M3: 4,8 sec) while its top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).

Design-wise and apart from the usual visual treatment with the side skirts, sport bumpers, 18-inch rims etc, Mercedes has equipped the C 63 AMG with a new hood featuring two bulges reminiscent of the ones found on the first-generation SLK roadster. In all, the C 63 AMG is probably the most brutal looking car among the three German sports sedans, but we would have definitely preferred another grille as it reminds us of supped-up Eastern European Mercedes taxis.

Inside, Merc designers were a bit more constrained as the only significant changes seem to concern the “cut” sports steering wheel and the new gauges in the dashboard. We’ll have more on the 2008 C 63 AMG as soon as we get our hands on the high-res pictures and the official press release.

Alfa Romeo Preparing 147 Ducati Corse Special Edition With 170Hp

Italian car site “Infomotori” is reporting that Alfa Romeo will introduce a special edition version of the 147 compact hatch developed in collaboration with Ducati Corse. The 147 Ducati Corse will be equipped with an enhanced version of the 1.9 turbodiesel engine, developing 170 Hp (+20 Hp). The extra 20Hp will be available via a power-boost switch in the centre console. Apart fom the more aggressive bodykit, the sporty trim and the 18-inch alloy wheels, the Ducati Corse version will also feature Alfa Romeo’s "Q2" limited slip differential.

Alfa Romeo Contest: Name The "Junior" And Win A Spider!

While everyone was fooled into believing that Alfa Romeo’s MINI adversary would be named “Junior” when it goes on sale next year, the Italian sports carmaker surprised us by announcing an online contest were the public will help choose the name of the hot hatch! The competition is open up for residents in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, England and Japan. Alfa Romeo will also hand out several prizes including a brand new Spider for the “godfather” of the so-called Junior.

If you happen to live in any of the countries liable for the competition, check out the links after the jump and give it a shot. Just don’t go for any weird names like Sabretooth or Poutaneska and please check out an Italian dictionary before you submit a name; Cazzo might sound cool in English but the Italians won’t find it amusing, trust us…

Fiat Group Reveals Fiat, Alfa & Lancia Design Studies

Fiat Group revealed details and pictures of the winning studies in the “Design the Italian Way” competition which was launched on November 30, 2006. In all, 200 students of 12 different nationalities took part in the competition. The design students were divided into three groups (Alfa Romeo, Lancia & Fiat) and in total they presented 100 projects of which 24 made it to the final stage. On September 20, six projects were singled out by the jury comprising experts from the design field, fashion world, architects and specialized journalists.

For the Fiat brand students were briefed to create a concept for the future Panda and a family of models around the Grande Punto. In regards of Lancia, participants were asked to develop two different concepts belonging to the same product family: a compact mainly for town use and a versatile, small-size MPV. Finally, those who chosen for the Alfa group, were told to produce three concepts: a 'large', versatile sports model; a flagship model and a 'small', zippy car, fun to drive and with an affordable price.

The closing evening of the “Design the Italian Way” competition took place on September 20, 2007 in the new Fiat Group Automobiles' Style Centre headquarters (Officina 83). Participants in this competition launched on November 30, 2006 came from eight of the world's leading design schools: Turin's European Institute of Design, the Design Faculty of Milan Polytechnic, Detroit College for Creative Studies, Coventry University of Art and Design, Tokyo Communications Arts, Moscow's Stroganov State University, Ahmedebad National Institute of Design (India) and the Umea University Institute of Design (Sweden).

The idea for this award was a joint effort that involved not only Style Centre designers but also the Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo brands and their respective Product, Engineering & Design and Human Resources management teams. The basic features to be incorporated in projects developed for each of the three brands were defined by the CEOs of Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo, namely, Luca De Meo, Olivier François and Antonio Baravalle.

The 200 students, of 12 different nationalities, who participated in the “Design the Italian Way” competition were divided into three groups – one for each brand – and in total they presented 100 projects. A winner for each brand was then chosen from designs submitted by each of the participating schools. In the majority of cases projects were the work of a 2/3-student team who were represented by one member at the final evening. All of them will participate in a Fiat Group Automobiles programme providing hands-on experience, thanks to a study grant covering five months in the Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo Style Centres. A training period that will specifically focus on developing Product Communication and Style Development skills.

During the closing evening the jury comprising experts from the design field, fashion world, architects and specialised journalists singled out six works from the 24 project finalists that were given special mentions. The awards covered the Best Italian Design for the Fiat, Lancia and Alfa Romeo brands; Best Innovative Material Use; Best Future Vision; Best Overall Communication.

For the Fiat brand the briefing students received was to develop a concept for the future Panda and to create a family of models around the Grande Punto. They were also told to bear in mind items and products associated with these two cars that can create a new, strong and distinctive family feeling based on smiles, a friendly feeling, simplicity and dynamism, which are the hallmarks of this brand.

As regards Lancia, students were asked to reinterpret the brand's concepts of refinement, glamour and technology in an innovative key, developing two different concepts belonging to the same product family: a compact mainly for town use and a versatile, small-size MPV. In this case, there was to be a special focus on interiors to ensure maximum possible personalisation in line with current fashion trends.

There were three concepts for Alfa Romeo: a 'large', versatile sports model; a flagship incorporating a new stylistic approach while still meeting the expectations of traditional customers; a 'small', zippy car, fun to drive and with an affordable price. As for interiors, the request was hi-tech devices, shapes and content. Sporty style and emotions are what differentiate the style of this brand.

On the occasion of the final evening of “Design then Italian Way”, held in the new premises of the Fiat Group Automobiles' Style Centre, three separate areas were organised – one for each brand – with an exhibition of works by the 24 finalists. Jury members were able to talk with the young designers, review their projects and decide which deserved special mention. And so after the gala dinner there was an official prize-giving for the 24 winning entries followed by awards for the projects selected for a special mention.

Here are the impressions of some of the designers at the Fiat Group Automobiles' Style Centre who were personally involved in organising this venture. Impressions as to how the various schools participated in the “Design the Italian Way” competition and came up with winning projects and how Italian style has been interpreted in the various countries.

College for Creative Studies of Detroit

Detroit, one of the world's car capitals. Accompanied by students from the College for Creative Studies we visited the GM 'building' where American cars dating from the Fifties to the present day are on show. This gave us a chance to reflect on how US style has changed. Rear fins, extremely long convertibles, exaggerated streamlining, outlandish stylistic provocations and over-generous sizes are nothing more than a memory.

Today, in fact, on the wave of greater penetration of Japanese models in the domestic market, the styling of American cars is much more subdued and sizes are much closer to what we are used to in Europe.

During a short tour of the College for Creative Studies we discovered that youngsters study a lot of technology and computer use but, above all, they learn the creative and 'practical' aspects of working as designers, starting from building complete scale models in the College's fully equipped internal workshop.

The Detroit students' approach to the competition was impeccable, based on an in-depth study of the brand's history as a source of inspiration for their task. The features of our brand had to be maintained and so we explained to them what designing an Alfa Romeo really means.

The models we reviewed displayed what for us was a familiar language, like the wheel to body Iine that ensures the car has 'aesthetic stability', large wheelarches, the so-called 'three-lobe' design (comprising the shield and lower wave that, together with the headlights, give cars their face), and many other features...

The results were way above average and taste and attention to proportions were in the best Alfa Romeo design tradition: windscreen moved back to obtain a large bonnet, high aerodynamic tail and other details guaranteeing a similar aesthetic effect – as we designers at the Alfa Romeo Style Centre say – a feline ready to spring.

It was difficult to choose only one winner because all the projects were very well executed. An admirable approach to the task and care taken in realising the projects are the strengths of these young future designers, in a world where there is increasing pressure to work faster, but where working diligently is even more important.

Ahmedebad National Institute of Design (India)

The welcome we received at the Ahmedebad National Institute of Design will certainly be impossible to forget: you could feel the passion and firm commitment with which the students tackled their work. Their in-depth analysis had fully captured the identity of our brands, with some unquestionably interesting results. Influenced by a culture taking its inspiration from 'decorativism, they produced some particularly elaborate objects, preferring formal as opposed to conceptual research. What struck me was how the students associated the Lancia brand with a gondola, an Italian icon representing superb craftsmanship, whereas Alfa Romeo was at times the aggressiveness of a cobra or the power of a tiger. Fiat, instead, was considered a brand where the most important features were colours and a fresh approach to shape and line.

This institute runs courses in industrial design, fashion, architecture, cartoon animation: students use top-level technological tools with a laboratory equipped with latest-generation fast prototyping machines.

The general level of the school is good, very close to that of its European counterparts, and students are highly motivated.

Juan Manuel Diaz

Tokyo Communication Arts, Japan

We found great variety in design and formal terms, in the projects developed by students at the Tokyo Communication Arts school. The result of a continuous interaction between the youngsters' personalities and Italian design has led to very conceptual proposals focused on style. All projects were realised bearing in mind brand values and the fact that Lancia is not present in the Japanese market meant students were rather like 'pioneers' exploring uncharted territory.

Very fluid, sinuous shapes are the hallmark of the projects, with graphics and lines that give the designs a very expressive harmony, sometimes intentionally provocative, but always bearing in mind technical and functional credibility.

The work of Tokyo Communication Arts' students shows they have a considerable knowledge of the car design world, executing ideas and volumetric approaches of their projects in a very professional manner, while a great deal of attention has been given to surfaces. This has resulted in top quality models created by students divided into small groups who worked with passion and pride and adopted a professional, respectful attitude.

For these two schools, interpreting Italian design is much less a run-of-the-mill task than it would seem. In fact, it isn't true that merely being Italian makes this task so much easier. But also, identifying the essence of Italian style from within is even more complex: so just like their foreign counterparts, students first had to undertake historical research and comparison of the various brands.

From their research it emerged that the hallmarks of Italian design are, on the one hand, good taste, creativity, affability, joy of life, but also the 'physicality' that is an underlying trait of the national character in terms of passion and conviviality. In fact, we are a nation of people who look for and engage in contact, discussion and gesturing, traits not found in other countries. And design is evidence of this desire to communicate, contact and interact.

Each of the two schools used their own individual approach and methods while performing this task. The Polytechnic conducted broad research based on an amazingly in-depth survey and capacity for analysis. They then came up with a stylistic idea based on their well-organised conceptual structure, expressing this in an attractive design perfectly in line with the theoretical content.

Instead the youngsters at ED acted essentially on instinct, researching the historical and current industrial scene to come up with what best fitted their strong underlying stylistic intuition. They then worked towards formalising the initial idea, refining and sometimes completely changing it, but without ever losing the freshness of their original idea.

So, diametrically opposite methods, although both yielding excellent results.

Returning to a design university after having made design my profession was extremely gratifying. The students' strong desire to learn and express their ideas grows every year and the tools available to them today are a real help in allowing them to fully display their creative streak.

Analysing the work of the British students I was amazed by the outstanding quality of their projects and I found it extremely interesting to follow these youngsters who have managed to maintain a high level of creativity and boundless enthusiasm, in strong contrast with their country's well-known, dismal climate.

I was also curious to find out the British point of view as regards an Italian car: I was very happy to see that they demonstrated great professionalism in terms of respecting the brand's values while including their own personal touches. Exactly what we were looking for.

In summary, Coventry has come up with fantastic projects and results that have opened up a new and interesting perspective.

The visit to Umea University was an extremely interesting experience too. At first – it was mid-winter – the beauty of the University's location and interesting architecture give the impression it is just the right place to study design. All the students achieved extraordinary results. I was expecting Swedish design to be cold and essential; instead Italian design has been interpreted with Swedish passion and taste, but without conforming to national canons. The students have managed to present their ideas for each of the Italian brands in a unique way and the beauty of all this is the innovation and visible excitement found in each of their projects.

StroganovState University, Moscow

Briefing young Russian designers was a very special experience. Moscow University is a huge complex with different laboratories dedicated to artistic disciplines, architecture and design. In specialist departments you can find a workstation where, for instance, a student is designing an ultra-modern high-speed train, sketching a side view freehand, still using geometric constructions we are no longer used to seeing today.

We managed to stimulate a great deal of interest and debate, despite the evident difficulties of long intervals caused by having to translate from English into Russian. Well, often they made me feel like the leader of a team of associates, they even resembled my habitual ones!

We dedicated quite a bit of time to recognizable brand values on which proposals were based and all students also had the right attitude in terms of tackling the communication and marketing strategy aspects for the products.

From the design standpoint, the Moscow students' ability to imagine our brands' vehicles projected into the future came about by breaking down past forms to come up with new and highly expressive ones.

From these encounters what remains is the memory of an experience showing that talent can be found in the most unexpected places. And also how the diversity found in a city like Moscow is a stimulus that nourishes the imagination and the 'human' design school, which is always the result of getting to know each other and discussion.

Frankfurt Preview: Alfa Romeo Customization Programme

Unless Alfa Romeo decides to surprise us in Frankfurt, we’ll have to do with the 147 C’N’C that we previewed earlier today and the display of customized versions under the “Unique-Alfa” program which enables customers to make their Alfa’s more refined and exclusive. Buyers can select between three different customization programs: the Vintage which adds a classic touch to your Alfa, the “fashionista” Collezione and the “sporty” TI. Guess we’re going to spend all of our time at Alfa’s stand gazing at the 8C Competizione – damn, think an every day John Doe like ourselves will ever get the chance of owing one of these.

The new ‘Unique Alfa’ Customisation Programme

‘Exclusiveness and personality’ have always been distinctive features of the Alfa Romeo brand, a fact borne out by the broad choice of bodies, engines, exterior outfits, interior furnishings and options, enabling customers to order the car that meets their needs and their desire to be different.

Remember the music group C+C Music Factory back in the 90’s - no? How about their hit "Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)"? Well, don’t sweat on it; they’ve got nothing to do with Alfa’s limited edition 147 anyway – we just thought we’d share a brain-dead moment with you. However, Alfa does support that the special edition C’N’C CoSTUME NATIONAL is inspired by the music world – Pop, Indie, and Garage – by ‘street culture’ and by the multimedia world. And yeah, we’re still trying to find the connection but whatev.

Frankfurt sees the debut of the new 147 C’N’C CoSTUME NATIONAL, the fruit of collaboration between Alfa Romeo and stylist Ennio Capasa. This special series will have a production run of 1000, and will be characterised not only by the exclusive Eldorado White paintwork with its exclusive mother-of-pearl effect (Polar White for the normal output), and by special refined details like the chrome-plated exhaust terminal, glossy black wing mirror cases, darkened rear lights and exclusive painted, sparkle-effect 17” wheels with their aeronautical design. And the ‘147 C’N’C’ logos on the pillars and tailgate add an extra touch of refinement.

Chicago Auto Show: 500Hp BMW ALPINA B7 makes US debut

Mmmm –sorry, I mean, Bbbbbb… how about the 115.000 US price tag and the fact that only about 200 pieces are coming to the States in 2007? Despite the drag queen look of the 7-Series, I’d seriously want to take this luxurious monster for a spin. Wouldn’t you?

Honda To Present Accord Tourer Concept In Frankfurt – Previews Next Gen Euro Accord & Acura TSX

Honda announced today that it'll uncloak the Accord Tourer Concept at the forthcoming 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. According to the Japanese firm, the Accord Tourer Concept will give us a clear indication of the design direction for the next generation of the European Accord which will go on sale in Europe from mid-2008. Moreover, since the current European Accord and the Acura TSX is practically the same model, Honda’s Frankfurt Concept will probably also preview the next generation TSX.
Honda supports that its new mid-size model, which will be available in both sedan and SW variants, will feature “wider and lower looks, signaling a sportier styling approach”. However, just like Toyota did yesterday with their Frankfurt press release (see here), Honda decided to keep the Accord Tourer Concept as a surprise for the Show. -Press release after the jump

HONDA AT THE FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW

Honda will be presenting the world debut of an exciting Accord Tourer Concept at the forthcoming 2007 Frankfurt motor show. A press conference will be held on the Honda stand in Hall 5 on the first Press Day, 11th September, between 13.15 and 13.45.

The Accord Tourer Concept will give a strong indication of the design direction of the all-new generation Accord Tourer set to debut in mid-2008 and its wider, lower look signals a more sporty, more emotional styling approach. This will be matched by a range of advanced, low emissions engines and innovative new chassis technology that will deliver exceptional handling without compromising ride comfort.

As well as an extensive selection of models from the passenger car range, the Honda stand will also feature a comprehensive line-up of motorcycles and power equipment products. The stand will focus around the twin themes of "Sports" and "Environment".

The "Environment" area will centre upon Honda's ground-breaking environmental technologies, such as petrol-electrical vehicles. This includes the Small Hybrid Sports Concept first revealed at the Geneva Show which demonstrates a unique fusion of advanced hybrid technology and fun-to-drive sports car characteristics. Alongside it will be Honda's next-generation clean diesel engine, the production Civic Hybrid and the FCX Concept with its fully-functioning fuel cell technology which made its European driving debut at the Gotland Ring in Sweden earlier this year.

The "Sports" area of the stand will include Honda's current F1 racing car, the RA107 piloted by Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello, alongside Civic Type R and Honda S2000 production models, There will also be a strong emphasis on the company's motorsport heritage and alongside the latest F1 car will be one of Honda's first, the 1967 RA300.

To emphasise the major contribution made by motorcycles towards Honda's sporting prowess and reputation there will be displayed examples of both the Repsol Honda RC212V from this year's MotoGP series - raced by Dani Pedrosa and Nicky Hayden - and one of the HM Plant Honda CBR1000RR Fireblades which contested this year's Isle of Man TT races and allowed John McGuinness to capture the first 130mph lap of the circuit and victory in the Senior TT Race.

The line-up of production motorcycles includes the world's first production motorcycle airbag system, available on the new Gold Wing, which can help lessen the severity of injuries caused by frontal collisions.

Despite what you may think, what you’re looking at the above photo isn’t some sort of a long-wheel base S2000 but, according to the Swedish edition of AMS, a test mule for Honda’s second generation NSX supercar. Caught in action lapping the Nordschleife in Germany, the test car allegedly wears a front mounted V10 engine powering all four wheels -the first generation NSX had a mid-engine (V6), rear-wheel drive layout. As for looks, according to our information, Honda will present a near-to-production concept at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show in October heavily based on the 2007 NAIAS.

The Tokyo Auto Salon (12 to 14 January) isn’t only about supped up Nismo 350Zs and Streams. It’s also about those weird Japanese modifiers like the people working at NAT’s (Nihon Automotive College) who took an early 90’s Honda Beat and turned it into “mini-me” version of the Acura / Honda NSX.
Apart from its looks, the MINI-SX has a mid-engine rear-wheel drive layout just like the NSX. However, that’s about all the similarities between the two Hondas as the Beat was equipped with a teeny-weenie 0.65-litre 3cylinder engine producing 64Hp.

Detroit Auto Show: Acura "Advanced Sports Car Concept"

I know what you first question is so let’s get straight to the point: Yes, the Acura “Advanced Sports Car Concept” does preview the next generation Acura / Honda NSX that according to our information will debut this autumn at the Tokyo Motor Show. While design-wise the production version will definitely be toned down in comparison with the concept we’re seeing here, NSX's succesor will maintain the ASCC’s powertrain layout.
Thus meaning, out goes the mid-engine (V6), rear-wheel drive layout of the previous NSX, in comes a front-mounted V10 engine and a rear-wheel-drive based version of Acura's Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD). So I guess no “cheap” Ferrari thrills here? Well, think of it this way: forget the F430 and think 599 GTB Fiorano. The latter not only has a front-mounted engine layout but Ferrari is also developing a 4WD system for it in the near future.

Wow, that was fast! Heck, the first generation NSX first went into production only about… 17 years ago. And it’s not over yet till we see the actual production version of Honda’s stunning NSX successor. See, the car in the picture is, according to Honda own word’s, “a concept that provides a glimpse at the next generation Acura exotic sports car”. Unfortunately that’s the only thing we know about the unexotically named, Acura “Advanced Sports Car Concept”. We’ll have more on the NSX concept closer to the opening date of the Detroit Show in January.
If you’re a bit confused about the name, we remind you that while the rest of the world knows the NSX as a Honda, in the US, it came under the name of Acura.

AC Schnitzer GP3.10: Equipped With LPG Version Of BMW M5’s 5.0L V10!

In line with the “eco-uber-alles-friendly” character of this year’s Frankfurt Show, BMW specialist AC Schnitzer will present one heck of a supped up BMW 3-Series Coupe. The GP3.10 is equipped with a modified version of the BMW M5/M6’s 5.0-liter V10 engine that can on LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) or regular gasoline producing 552 HP (+45 than the M5/M6) and up to 540 Nm of maximum torque. When it uses LPG which is cheaper than petrol, it produces about 15 percent less CO2 from the exhaust.

The GP3.10 sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 4.5 sec and to 200 km/h (124 mph) in just 13.9 sec. while it can reach a top speed of 320 km/h – 199 mph. Apart from the engine mods, AC Schnitzer also upgraded the BMW 3-Series’ suspension, brakes and tires but unfortunately, they also believed that they could do the same with the bimmers appearance. Driving pleasure has been written large at AC Schnitzer for 20 years. And happily, nothing will change for the 62nd IAA. But this goal can be reached in a totally alternative way, as the launch of the superb AC Schnitzer GP3.10 GAS POWERED shows. This high-performance coupé has LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) drive, where power and efficiency, economy and ecology, meet in an exciting study.

As if the extravagant exterior of the project vehicle, based on the current 3-series coupé, were not enough, under the bonnet growls the V10 engine of the current M5/M6 which AC Schnitzer is presenting at the show for the first time in bivalent design: The vehicle has a fully sequential LPG system with two parallel 5-cylinder vaporizers. There's no loss of power or dynamics. The engine, tuned with a remapped control unit and modified exhaust tract with sports catalyst and exhaust manifold, develops 552 HP/406 kW and produces up to 540 Nm at the crankshaft. In itself, that's 45 horses more than the M5/M6. But why power this with LPG.

Liquified Petroleum Gas is a sensible alternative to normal petrol fuel, both economically and ecologically, and after corresponding conversion can be burned in almost any petrol engine. Per litre, LPG is not only cheaper than petrol but produces around 15 percent less CO2 from the exhaust. With over 2700 filling stations in Germany alone, fuel supplies are guaranteed everywhere, and the 80 litre gas tank fits on board with the original 60 litre petrol tank. So you can switch between fuels at any time. In any case, acceleration is more than just acceptable. The sprint to 100 km/h takes 4.5 seconds, and the 200 mark is passed after just 13.9 seconds. Only at 320 km/h does the pressure on your back begin to ease. Nimble enough to show the rear lights to many powerful sports cars. Especially when a racing suspension from Aachen provides incredible handling qualities. And to match the power of the acceleration, there's the brakes on the AC Schnitzer GP3.10 GAS POWERED: At the front, 8-pot fixed calliper brakes with perforated and vented discs size 374 x 36 mm, at the rear a 4-pot brake system with 350 x 24 mm discs.

Talking of slowing down: the striking body design will soon bring passers-by to a stop. In conjunction with the mineral green special paintwork, the AC Schnitzer aerodynamic kit is a real eyecatcher. The air intakes on the front wings, with their characteristic chrome ribs, and the rear 60 mm wheelarch extensions, are particularly successful. With the AC Schnitzer GP3.10 GAS POWERED, AC Schnitzer has created a feast for all the senses, where the centrally positioned sports rear silencer with its sonorous crescendo takes centre stage acoustically

The rear styling with its special contours and the rear skirt with integral diffuser, the rear roof wing with carbon centre part, are as aesthetically pleasing as the powerful front skirt with its coarse-mesh sports grille. The latter makes an effective contribution to the breathing of the oxygen-hungry five-litre engine. Equally breathtaking for the spectator is the first sight of the racing rims Type VI.

The latest creation from the Aachen wheel manufacturer combines the classic Y-spoke appearance with five striking hollow spokes and bicolor finish. Naturally these decorative elements are not just available for the AC Schnitzer GP3.10 GAS POWERED. For the moment however the latter is a unique creation not for sale, with an estimated value of 198,000 Euro. But we can still get excited because for sure, numerous components will soon find their way into the regular AC Schnitzer range. Parts of the exciting sports interior can already be ordered for example by customers with a 3-series coupé.

Boy, these Germans don’t know when to stop do they… We know its crazy but we love it! Making its worldwide preview in Frankfurt along with the Audi RS6 Avant and Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG Estate, AC Schnitzer’s muscle-wagon is based on the 507 Hp BMW M5 Touring. Like its sedan spouse, the ACS5 Touring packs a ludicrous 552 Hp under its bonnet thanks to the M5’s revised 5.0-litre V10

The V10 unit has been enhanced with a custom engine control module, a special exhaust manifold, sports catalysts and a twin rear silencer with increased gas flow to keep the exhaust back pressure as low as possible. AC Schnitzer also removed the V-max limit on the ACS5 Sport Touring announcing a top speed of around… 320 km/h or 200 mph. Did we mention that it has 500-liters of luggage space and that the rear seats fold.

The ACS5 Sport Touring also features a suspension kit that includes sports performance springs, which lower the centre of gravity of the vehicle further and reduce body roll thanks to the harder set-up, and a special aluminum strut brace for the front axle. In contrast to the standard M5 which is equipped with a two-pot brake, the ASC5’s front wheels are fitted with an 8-pot high performance braking system. Finally, AC-Schnitzer dressed the M5 Touring with a relatively subtle aerodynamic package that includes carbon spoilers, a chromed front grille and 20-inch alloy rims in 245/35 R20 rubber up front and 285/30 R20 or 295/30 R20 at the rear.

Though it may look like it, this poor BMW Z4 M Coupe hasn’t been visually abused by a bitter girlfriend who wanted to get back at her cheating boyfriend. Actually, you’ll have to pay several thousands of euros to make your standard Z4 M Coupe look like someone spilled a dinosaur egg on it. But hey, look at the bright side; not only do you get a “enterprise-starship” style miniature roof spoiler but AC Schnitzer boosts the straight-six’s power from 343Hp to 350Hp and they also remove the electronic speed restrictor. What else could a man want.

The concept PROFILE by AC Schnitzer based on the Z4 M Coupé

Take the first ascent of the 8,848 metre high Mount Everest, the expeditions to the poles or the dive into the 11 km deep canyon of the Mariana Trench. There have always been individuals and extreme characters who have pushed our boundaries and discovered new terrain. An extreme region for automotive tuners, where only a few venture, has always been the BMW M-series cars, in particular the uncompromising Z4 M-Coupé, a thoroughbred driving machine.

But the fact that the limits of this extraordinary car are far from reached is evident from the new concept vehicle by AC Schnitzer - the PROFILE - even at first glance. Classic engine tuning hauls the power of the high-revving six-cylinder in-line plant to a robust 350 HP. Not only is a special "active breathing" airbox used, but the engine control unit has been remapped. But power alone isn’t enough to get the maximum from an athletic heart. So the modified rear axle ratio of 3.91:1 provides better sprint capacity, while the perfectly smooth transmission with the AC Schnitzer Short Shift ensures crisp changes by the driver.

And as you listen to the sonorous baritone note of the left/right sports exhaust system with the trapezoid tailpipes, you could be deceived into thinking that the driver is not changing gears, but playing some kind of a musical instrument. A feast for all the senses: Visually the stunning colour combination of white-orange casts its spell and perfectly enhances the exquisite contours of the AC Schnitzer bodykit. From the front skirt with its suggestive cup-wings via the widened wheelarches and flanks with the gill-like vents - as already used on the legendary BMW 507- the dynamic line is drawn over the bulging side skirts to the rear skirt with carbon diffuser.

BMW Group specialist, AC Schnitzer –how about a pimped Rolls boyz?, has released a new performance and cosmetic package for the second generation (new) MINI Cooper S. In a nutshell, the German based tuner’s package includes a bodykit, bi-colour 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels, a suspension spring kit and interior accessories. Later on the year AC Schnitzer will also introduce a performance upgrade kit that’ll hand a few more ponies to the Cooper S’s 170Hp twin-turbocharged, 1,6-liter engine.

ACS3 3.5i Convertible: AC Schnitzer fixates on BMW’s CC Looks

Nop, there’s no larger twin-turbos or chip swaps here, just an exterior body-kit consisting of front/rear spoilers, side skirts, tailpipes and 19-inch rims in 245/30R20 and 295/25R20 tyres or 20-inch in 225/35R19 and 255/30R19 rubber. And oh yeah, that red “Turbo” logo on the bimmer’s butt. Jeez, the last time I saw one of those it must have been on a Zastava… That aside and while aesthetic criteria’s are somewhat subjective, to be honest, we can’t help but preferring BMW’s own individual (without the boot spoiler) or "M" styling packs for the 3-Series Convertible.
As for horsepower lovers, AC Schnitzer hasn’t forgotten you since the German tuner announced that it is currently developing a performance kit for the twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight six that packs 306 HP/225 kW.

AC Schnitzer ACS3 3.5i Convertible

A Convertible provides the ultimate for the senses: Where can you experience driving more directly than in an open car, with the wind gently emphasising the acceleration, the acoustic muscle play of the engine teasing your ears, and a breathtaking silhouette reflected in every shop window. The new BMW 3-series Convertible, a complete car with folding hard top, stimulates the automotive pleasure centre without setting reason aside. When you've had one taste, you soon long for more - for example the ACS3 3.5i Convertible.

In designing the bodykit, the objective for AC Schnitzer was not to hide the body contours under excessive bulges, but to emphasise the natural characteristics of the vehicle in a structured way. So the front skirt, which simultaneously increases downforce, in its basic design follows the three-piece original but it is substantially softer, more facetted and more energetic. Like the AC Schnitzer side skirts which aesthetically highlight the side crease of the Convertible body and with their asymmetric lines, rising towards the back, emphasise the sporting abilities of the vehicle even when stopped. Its charm is enhanced with the clearly marked AC Schnitzer Racing rims type IV in silver, which at the front measure 9.0Jx20" and at the rear 10.0Jx20" (tyres 245/30R20 and 295/25R20). As an alternative, the dark Type IV BiColor wheels in 8.5Jx19" at the front and 9.5Jx19" at the rear give the BMW a hint of Badboy (tyres 225/35R19 and 255/30R19).

Although the classic rear view of the new 3-series Convertible is already eyecatching, the AC Schnitzer design language with its more strongly contoured rear skirt expresses extra sporting ambitions with no loss of credibility or coherence. The twin flow left/right tailpipes of the AC Schnitzer exhaust contribute to the neat overall impression not just visually but, with the gas pedal pressed, also acoustically with a unique crescendo. The twin sports rear silencer is enhanced by tailpipe trims in "Racing" design, which visually suggest a stylised horizontal figure eight, the mathematical symbol for "infinity".

A reference to the enormous power reserves of the vehicle, expressed above all in the superb BMW six cylinder twin turbo, a power plant which has been praised unanimously by the trade press, and which with its 306 HP/225 kW has caused worries for many competitors. The duel would be even more difficult for them with the AC Schnitzer performance kit which is currently in development. The 335d will also soon undergo a power make-over at Aachen. For the Convertible with the 3.0 litre diesel (standard 231 HP/170 kW) the tuners already offer a superb Power-Plus pack that increases the power to 265 HP/195 kW. Power reserves which the chassis can handle easily thanks to fine tuning by AC Schnitzer.

A special antiroll bar kit for the rear axle is already available, and the complete suspension with race technology is just completing its final test laps on the Nürburgring. A multipiece AC Schnitzer alloy strut brace divides asymmetric forces evenly over the entire front of the car and provides not only a purely functional aspect but a high level of unobtrusive aesthetics. An image which can naturally also be expected in the interior, where high quality decor and controls give the driver the visual and tactile impression of driving a true AC Schnitzer at every moment.

Available exclusively from authorized Abarth dealers in early 2008, the sport kit includes a number of visual and mechanical enchantments. With the “esseesse” kit, the Abarth’s 1.4-litre turbocharged engine delivers 180 hp @ 5,750 rpm and a maximum torque of 272 Nm (201-lbs/ft) compared to the standard model’s 155 Hp and 206 Nm (152-lbs/ft) of torque. Combined with a 6-speed manual gearbox, the enhanced engine raises the Abarth’s top speed from 208 km/h (129 mph) 215 km/h (134 mph) while acceleration from 0-100 km/h (62 mph) drops from 8.2 sec to 7.7 sec

Other mechanical modifications include the special suspension set up (both the front and rear suspension has been lowered by a further 20 mm compared to the Grande Punto Abarth), and the enhanced braking system (the front discs are perforated and fitted with high-performance pads).

Since being faster isn’t enough for most people, the “esseesse” pack also includes a very aggressive bodykit that adds new bumpers, side sills, large twin-exhaust pipes, a roof spoiler, plenty of stickers and 18-inch alloy wheels. For the moment at least, Abarth hasn't announced any accesories for the interior so we added the photos of the standard Grande Punto Abarth's cabin.

According to Fiat, the “esseesse” kit is reserved especially for the Grande Punto Abarth, and can only be installed at official Abarth dealers. The car can be converted at the time of sale, up to 1 year after purchase, or after 20,000 km on the road. Once the work has been done, the tuner will deal with the administration required to have the vehicle approved.

Frankfurt Show: Fiat Grande Punto Abarth SS 180Hp

Just as the Grande Punto Abarth went on sale in Europe this month, Fiat announced that it will unveil the Grande Punto Abarth SS (Super Sport) prototype at the forthcoming Frankfurt Show. The SS is basically a stock Grande Punto Abarth with more horsepower and a highly aggressive bodykit kit that Fiat names “essesse”. The bodykit adds among other things, new bumpers, side sills, large twin-exhaust pipes, bigger wheels and a roof spoiler. The kit also includes suspension and brake upgrades along with an extra 35Hp, boosting the 1.4L Turbocharged engine’s overall output to 180Hp. Though we’ll have to wait until the opening of the Frankfurt Show on Sep. 13 to learn more details, expect the SS or “essesse” kit to be available in early 2008.

The legendary Abarth ‘Scorpion’ returns

After the official presentation in March this year, Abarth now makes its return at the Frankfurt Motor Show. One of the most prestigious brands in world motorsports. Abarth has always been synonymous with aggressive cars, competitiveness, passion and excitement, and it now returns with a new range that will appeal to all lovers of motor racing.

The stand will focus on two important concepts linked to the brand’s revival, which represent the most characteristic aspects of its identity: on one hand, the racing world, and on the other, conversions and boosted performance achieved by the application of highly technological solutions in a simple, intuitive package.

The first concept is presented very effectively with the display of a Grande Punto Abarth S2000, positioned on a large steel platform in the shape of a scorpion, to underline both the power and the unique nature of the technical features of this car.

The second concept is expressed on the stand in two different ways. First of all, there is a large photo-quality configurator, that allows visitors to appreciate and examine hands-on the elements that are important in the conversion world. But the real novelty at the show is the Grande Punto Abarth “essesse” (Super Sport) prototype, exhibited on a large glass platform, under which are a number of 3D monitors. These sophisticated screens project the components of the conversion kit which have made the basic version of the Grande Punto Abarth even more powerful and aggressive, in the best tradition of the Scorpion.

The Grande Punto Abarth went on the market this month, equipped with the 1.4 petrol Turbo engine that delivers 150 bhp at 5500 rpm (boosted to 155 bhp if 98 RON petrol is used) combined with a mechanical 6-speed gearbox that takes it to a top speed of 208 km/h, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 8.2 seconds. This is the Abarth’s first interpretation of the Grande Punto, but the initiative will soon be extended to other models.

Grande Punto Abarth “essesse” prototype (Super Sport)

The absolute star of the stand is the Grande Punto Abarth “essesse” (Super Sport) prototype. A jewel of assertiveness and elegance, the car is offered with a booster kit that almost doubles its power output with relation to the basic model (up to almost 180 bhp). The ‘“essesse”’ kit also envisages a number of specific elements that accentuate both the sporty look of the Abarth model (for example adhesives with the ‘essesse’ logo or a chequered flag) and its dynamic behaviour, with a particular low stance or a more powerful braking system. This is a feature that maintains a brand tradition: for example, the Fiat 500 of 1958 delivered 13 bhp at 4000 rpm and a top speed of 85 km/h, while the Fiat 500 Abarth of the same year, produced 26 bhp at 5000 rpm and a top speed of 118 km/h.

The Grande Punto Abarth and the Grande Punto Abarth with the ‘essesse’ kit aim to revive the thrill of those cars, offering an opportunity, addressed to the young in particular, of entering the racing world in total safety and at an accessible price.

Grande Punto Abarth S2000

The public in Frankfurt will also be able to admire the extraordinary Grande Punto Abarth S2000. This is a racing car designed for racing stables, and under the management of Abarth Racing Operations, it is competing in the 2007 Italian Rally Championship, with Giandomenico Basso and his navigator Mitia Dotta, and the IRC (Intercontinental Rally Challenge) with drivers Anton Alen, Andrea Navarra and Umberto Scandola.

Powered by a 2000 cc aspirated engine that delivers 270 bhp, with 4-wheel drive, the new Grande Punto Abarth S2000 is the heir to the version that won the 2006 European title and the Intercontinental Rally Challenge with Giandomenico Basso and Mitia Dotta, and took the 2006 Italian Rally Championship winning 7 races.

We must underline that the approximately 25 cars built so far have been ordered by several racing stables in Europe and elsewhere, to compete in domestic and international rallies. And now, thanks to this technological superiority, the new Grande Punto Abarth S2000 tackles these two championships as the title-holder, with the same determination.

The head of Racing Operations for Abarth & C. Spa is Claudio Berro, who can draw on a staff with a great deal of experience in the racing sector as well as a team of outstanding drivers.

Even though Fiat hasn’t considered reviving the Autobianchi brand and its legendary A112, it seems like the new Fiat 500 has awakened memories from the past in Italy. Our friends at Autoblog.it have posted a CGI (Computer Generated Image) featuring a modern interpretation of the A112 dressed in Abarth clothing.
Considered by many as the Italian “MINI”, the Autobianchi A112 was a sleek supermini based on the Fiat 127 that remained in production for a whopping 17 years from 1969 to 1986 selling around 1.3 million units. The A112 was subsequently replaced by the Autobianchi Y10 (predecessor of the Lancia Ypsilon). In 1989 the Autobianchi badge was dropped in favor of Lancia's except in Italy were the brand managed to survive until 1995

The original A112 Abarth was introduced in 1971 and it became an instant success among young drivers. At first the A112 Abarth came out with a 59Hp 965 cc engine which was replaced by a 70Hp 1,049 cc unit coupled to a five-speed gearbox in 1975. Weighing in at just 700 kg (1,540 lb) the A112 Abarth was a nimble little hatch that rightly found many admirers in Europe.

Due to make its public debut in 2008 -most probably at the Geneva Show next March, the intriguing Fiat 500 Abarth is undergoing through its final test faze. In this video, we see a lightly camouflaged 500 Abarth performing test runs at the

Nurburgring race-track in Germany. Albeit the author of the video presumes that the 500 Abarth will be equipped with a 200Hp strong 1.6-litre Turbocharged petrol unit, we highly doubt it as our information talks about the 1.4-litre T-Jet engine found in the Grande Punto (120Hp) and its Abarth sibling (150Hp).

With its sporty appearance and sumptuous level of appointments, the immediately available Sport Edition is a new highlight among the Coupés and Cabriolets of the Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class. 18-inch light-alloy wheels in an exclusive design, AMG styling features in the exterior and bi-xenon headlamps as standard give this special model a particularly distinctive appearance. The sporty, exclusive atmosphere of the interior is especially characterised by the grippy AMG ergonomic sports steering wheel, aluminium-look sports pedals and special velour floor mats.

The letter combination CLK has denoted excitement and driving pleasure for many years. The new "Sport Edition" special model now makes the Coupés and Cabriolets of the Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class even more desirable. Both externally and in the interior, the Sport Edition further upgrades the CLK models and makes them even more attractive and dynamic.

The exciting design of the CLK-Class is accentuated by muscular AMG styling features for an even more dynamic appearance. These include a front apron with more pronounced contours, as well as the rear apron and side skirts which typify AMG models. Large, 18-inch light-alloy wheels in a new, six twin-spoke design (front 225/40 R 18, rear 255/35 R18) further enhance the sporty appearance and contribute to driving pleasure. The same applies to the perforated front brake discs. The brake callipers of Sport Edition models bear the lettering "Mercedes-Benz".

The special CLK Sport Edition models are equipped with bi-xenon headlamps including dynamic beam control, cornering lights with an integral foglamp function and a headlamp washer system as standard. The Active Light System is also available as optional equipment. A large, chrome-plated exhaust tailpipe and a special rear silencer provide a sonorous, sporty exhaust note.

Sporty, masculine features

The new Sport Edition is based on the already sporty configuration of the luxurious AVANTGARDE design and equipment line. In models equipped with an automatic transmission, an AMG sports steering wheel with upper sections of perforated leather and steering wheel shift paddles ensures an even more sporty touch. Depending on the engine variant, a further technical highlight is available in the form of the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic transmission, the world’s only car transmission of this kind. Its seven gears can be shifted either automatically, via a manual shift programme or by means of steering wheel shift paddles as in the motor racing world. Moreover, 7G-TRONIC Sport reduces gearshift times by up to 30 percent.

The sporty atmosphere of the interior is accentuated by black upholstery in a combination of high-quality ARTICO man-made leather and fabric. A black leather interior is also available on request. Other sporty touches include a sports pedal cluster with an aluminium look and non-slip studs, as well as velour floor mats with silver-coloured edging.

The special models of the Mercedes-Benz CLK Sport Edition are available as Coupés and Cabriolets, with a choice of six powerful engine variants which are among the most economical in their class.

2009 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Scooped

Unlike other rumours and renderings we’ve been seen lately, the C63 AMG is really coming to a Mercedes outlet near you either this fall or early 2008. AutoMotorundSport not only managed to scoop the top-end C-Class performing test runs in Germany but they also came up with a rendering giving us a preview of the car

While the previous gen C55 AMG wore a 5.4 V8 pumping out 367Hp, the 2009 C63 AMG will take advantage of the 6,2-litre V8 engine that’s fitted in the CLK63 AMG, E63 AMG, CLS63AMG etc. With the help of a compressor, the V8 will deliver around 500Hp, thus making the C63 AMG the most powerful kid on the German block, out-powering both the Audi RS4 and BMW M3. We don’t know if that’ll be enough to give its two German rivals a lesson, but it’ll sure give the C63 AMG a place in the spotlight when it’s unveiled.

Official: Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster

Mercedes just unleashed the long-awaited SLR McLaren Roadster which will go on sale from September 2007. Like the 1999 Vision SLR concept on which it's based, the production version of the SLR McLaren Roadster retains the scissor-type doors of its coupe counterpart. Unlike the SL and SLK roadsters, the SLR features a retractable soft-top which is available in three different colors. The roof opens and closes semi-automatically in less than ten seconds, with the driver having to a little “dirty” work by unlocking the roof from the windscreen frame and briefly raising it, after which it folds away electrically. Disproving rumors that Mercedes would prefer the upgraded 650Hp V8 of the SLR McLaren 722 Special Edition, the Roadster retains the “stock” 626Hp turbocharged V8 which is coupled to an AMG Speedshift R five-speed automatic transmission. According to Mercedes, the Roadster sprints from 0 to 100km/h (62mph) in just 3,8 sec while it reaches a maximum speed of 332km/h (206mph) which identical to the Coupe’s performance figures -3,8 sec & 334 km/h (207mph) respectively

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster: An open-air adventure for all the senses

Mercedes-Benz will in future also market its SLR McLaren super sports car in the form of a roadster with a top. In common with Formula 1 vehicles of today, it, too, will be made of carbon fibre, a material that will endow the vehicle with a very high degree of safety as well as extreme torsional stiffness at the same high level as the coupé version. This gives rise, in combination with the racing-type chassis, to outstanding ride characteristics.

The maximum speed of the new high-performance sports car, which is powered by an AMG V8 compressor engine delivering 460 kW/626 hp, is 332 km/h, therefore at the same high level as the coupé. Although, thanks to its fully retractable top, the Roadster offers undiluted open-air driving pleasure in the highest performance class, its occupants in no way lose out in terms of comfort or the vehicle's suitability for everyday use. Consequently, the new Roadster opens up a new dimension in refinement for open-top super sports cars.

Like the coupé version, the new Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Roadster once again unites the legend of the successful SLR racing models from the 1950s with the innovative technology of modern Formula 1 vehicles from the Vodafone-McLaren-Mercedes team. Typical stylistic elements, such as the arrow-shaped tip of the Formula 1 Silver Arrow, establish a visual link with the racing cars. The SLR leg-end of the 50s lives on stylistically in the distinctive lateral louvers, side pipes behind the front wheels and the wide-opening gullwing doors.

The new Roadster benefits technically from the many years of experience of Mercedes-Benz and its Formula 1 partner McLaren. Apart from two aluminium engine frames, its body is made entirely of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) materials, making the vehicle an exception among high-performance sports cars. Especially for the Roadster, complex carbon-fibre technology has been intelligently further developed for the monocoque chassis. The result is low weight, exemplary energy absorption and, therefore, extremely high occupant safety as well as a degree of torsional stiffness hitherto unattained in open-top vehicles. This leads to outstanding ride characteristics of the kind otherwise found only in closed-top super sports cars.

The puristic top is suitable for high speeds

The exceptional qualities of the Roadster are attributable also to the fully retractable top, which blends harmoniously into the flowing lines of the SLR McLaren. Its newly developed roof material, which is available in three different colours, not only guarantees complete suitability for everyday use in all weathers, but also endows the high-performance sports car with characteristics that are exception-ally unusual in a roadster. For example, at 332 km/h, the maximum speed is at the high level of the coupé version. Conversation is still possible at well over 200 km/h on open-air journeys thanks to the favourable aeroacoustics.

The roof opens and closes semi-automatically in less than ten seconds, thereby combining the desire for convenience with the puristic character of the roadster. To open, the roof merely needs to be unlocked from the windscreen frame and be briefly raised, after which it folds away electrically. Since an aluminium cover is integrated into its front section, the roof elegantly closes off the top when re-tracted.

Sophisticated aerodynamics and racing-type chassis

In the wind tunnel, the Roadster has been optimised for high speeds with regard to handling, aeroacoustics and aerodynamics. It likewise employs the aerodynamic concept already known from the coupé version, featuring an airbrake integrated into the access lid and a diffusor in the rear bumper to provide increased downforce on the rear axle.

The open two-seater is equipped with a racing-type chassis featuring high-performance carbon-ceramic brake discs, thereby setting extremely high stan-dards. Its front-mid-engine provides for optimum weight distribution. With 460 kW/626 hp and a maximum torque of 780 Nm, the AMG V8 compressor engine, which is coupled to an AMG Speedshift R five-speed automatic transmission, accelerates the Roadster from zero to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds.

Unique safety and exclusive fittings

A high degree of safety is ensured by unique carbon-fibre crash elements, steel-reinforced A-pillars and two fixed roll-over bars. The comprehensive specification also features adaptive airbags, knee and side airbags as well as seat belt tensioners and a tyre-pressure monitoring system.

The exclusive standard equipment includes semi-aniline-leather-upholstered carbon-fibre bucket seats which can be individually adapted to the driver and front passenger by means of differently sized seat pads; dual-zone automatic air-conditioning; a high-quality BOSE premium sound system; a multifunction sport steering wheel with gear-change paddles, and a navigation system with integral radio and CD player.

The new Mercedes-Benz SLR Roadster, like the coupé, is produced at McLaren's Formula 1 factory in Woking, England, in accordance with stringent Mercedes-Benz quality criteria and will be available as from September 2007.
